Best Socks for Sweaty Feet: What Actually Works

1 Aug 2026

Your feet contain around 250,000 sweat glands, more per square centimetre than almost anywhere else on your body. On a warm day, or a long shift, they can produce a surprising amount of moisture. Trapped inside shoes, that moisture is what leads to damp socks, odour, blisters and fungal problems.

Here's the thing most people get wrong: the smell isn't the sweat. Sweat is nearly odourless. The smell is bacteria feeding on sweat in a warm, airless environment. So the best socks for sweaty feet are the ones that deny bacteria that environment.

What to look for

1. Moisture-wicking fibres, not absorbent ones. Cotton is the worst offender here. It absorbs sweat, holds it against your skin, and stays wet for hours. You want fibres that move moisture away from the skin so it can evaporate, merino, technical synthetics, or bamboo viscose.

2. Breathability. A tightly woven, thick sock traps heat. Look for socks with ventilation zones or naturally breathable fabric. Bamboo viscose has a porous fibre structure that allows better airflow than cotton of the same weight.

3. Antibacterial properties. Some socks are treated with chemical antimicrobials that wash out over time. Bamboo viscose is naturally unfriendly to odour-causing bacteria, and that property doesn't rinse away, because it's the fibre itself rather than a coating.

4. A proper fit. Loose socks bunch, rub and hold sweat in folds. A snug (not tight) fit with a seamless toe reduces both sweat pooling and blisters.

Fabric comparison for sweaty feet

Fabric Wicks moisture Breathability Odour control Verdict
Cotton Poor, absorbs and holds Moderate Poor Avoid for sweaty feet
Polyester blends Good Moderate Poor to moderate Fine for sport, can hold odour
Merino wool Very good Good Very good Excellent but warm and pricier
Bamboo viscose Very good Very good Very good Best all-rounder for daily wear

Everyday habits that help

  • Rotate shoes, give each pair 24 hours to dry out
  • Change socks daily (or twice daily in hot weather)
  • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly between the toes
  • Choose breathable shoes when you can; airtight trainers make everything worse

If sweating is severe, constant and interfering with daily life, it may be hyperhidrosis, worth a chat with a pharmacist or GP, as effective treatments exist.

Where bamboo socks fit in

We make our socks from bamboo viscose precisely because of how it handles moisture: it wicks sweat, breathes well, and naturally resists the bacteria that cause odour. Our bamboo trainer socks and bamboo crew socks are both built for exactly the warm-day, long-shift scenario this article is about.
