It's how many needles the knitting machine uses around the circumference: more needles, finer stitches, denser fabric, smoother finish. Most high-street socks sit somewhere around 100 to 144. These are 200.
What you feel is a closer, silkier surface and a rib that holds its definition rather than flattening out. What you get over time is a sock that resists thinning at the ball of the foot, because the same amount of yarn is distributed across more, smaller stitches.
Still seamless
