How to Prevent Blisters When Walking and Hiking

Curtis3 min read

A blister is your skin's response to two things happening together: friction and moisture. Get on top of both and you can walk or hike all day without one forming. Here's how.

Why blisters form

Blisters are caused by repeated rubbing (friction) against skin that's been softened by moisture (sweat or rain). The layers of skin separate, and fluid fills the gap. That means blister prevention comes down to a simple triangle:

Reduce friction · Manage moisture · Get the fit right.

Nail those three and blisters have nowhere to start.

1. Manage moisture: start with your socks

Damp skin blisters far more easily than dry skin, which is why cotton socks are a hiker's enemy. Cotton soaks up sweat and holds it against your foot for hours.

Choose moisture-wicking socks (bamboo rayon, merino or technical blends) that pull sweat away from the skin. Drier feet are blister-resistant feet. This single change prevents more blisters than anything else.

2. Reduce friction

  • Wear properly fitted socks with a smooth, seamless toe: bunching and seams are friction points
  • Consider a liner sock on long hikes: a thin inner sock lets the two sock layers rub against each other instead of your skin
  • Apply an anti-chafe balm or tape to known hot spots before you set off
  • Keep toenails trimmed to avoid rubbing

3. Get the fit right

  • Break in new boots gradually before a big walk; never debut them on a long hike
  • Make sure boots aren't too loose (foot slides) or too tight (pressure points)
  • Lace properly to stop your heel lifting
  • Adjust for swelling: feet expand on long walks, so a little room helps

4. Act at the first "hot spot"

The single most useful habit: the moment you feel a warm, rubbing sensation, stop and deal with it. Don't push on. A hot spot is a blister that hasn't formed yet. Cover it with tape or a blister plaster immediately and you'll usually avoid the blister entirely. Five minutes now saves a limping afternoon.

5. Sort your kit before you go

  • Two pairs of good socks so you can change if one pair gets wet
  • Blister plasters and tape in your pack
  • Dry feet at breaks if conditions allow

The sock that does the heavy lifting

Most of blister prevention is moisture management, and that's exactly what bamboo rayon socks are good at. Our bamboo rayon hiking and walking socks wick sweat, cushion the heel and toe, and have a smooth knit with no abrasive seams: the fabric equivalent of the advice above.

They already rank among the top results for bamboo rayon hiking socks, and blister-free walkers are why.

These socks are just perfect. The fit, the length, the feel. I'm autistic and struggle to find clothing I like, but these have become my favourite socks.

Incredible on big walks (10–30km), solid cushioning and support throughout. Gym 3–5 times a week in them too, and no sign of wear.
